Osteopathy is a manual art and science, provided by our Canmore clinic, deigned to restore the circulatory and neuromuscular systems by examining the intimate relationship between structure and function of the entire body. Our Canmore Osteopathic Manual Therapists use it as a means to permit an optimal physiological state that is based on the body's extraordinary ability to to return to a healthy state.

The Osteopathic Manual Therapists at our Canmore osteopathy clinic are trained to observe and understand how the intricate bond between bones, joints, muscles, nerves, and myofascial connective tissues in a specific region can have an influence on other regions of the body. Hands-on treatments by our Canmore osteopathic Manual Therapist involve mobilisation and gentle manipulation of the musculoskeletal, cranio-sacral, and visceral systems as therapeutic tools used to benefit and treat the person as a whole.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is the art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation; of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being; and of enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential in the daily occupations of life (Townsend& Polatajko, 2013, p. 380). 380).

Occupational therapists are highly trained health-care professionals. Effective 2008, entry level education requirements in Canada include a professional Master’s degree in occupational therapy.

Occupational therapists define an occupation as much more than a chosen career. Occupation refers to everything that people do during the course of everyday life. Each of us have many occupations that are essential to our health and well-being. Occupational therapists believe that occupations describe who you are and how you feel about yourself. A child, for example, might have occupations as a student, a playmate, a dancer and a table-setter.

Responsibilities/Activities

Occupational therapists use a systematic approach based on evidence and professional reasoning to enable individuals, families, groups, communities, organizations, or populations to develop the means and opportunities to identify and engage in the occupations of life. This collaborative process involves assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, modifying and evaluating the client in relation to occupational engagement in self-care, work, study, volunteerism and leisure. Occupational therapists use key enablement skills such as adaptation, advocacy, coaching, collaboration, consultation, coordination, designing/building, educating, engaging and specializing to enable occupation. Occupational therapists may assume different roles such as advising on; health risks in the workplace, safe driving for older adults, or programs to promote mental health for youth. Occupational therapists also perform functions as managers, researchers, program developers, educators, and practice scholars in addition to the direct delivery of professional services.

Francine is a 2013 graduate from the European School of Osteopathy in the UK. Her vision is to help people access peace and tranquility within themselves and the environment, and to be able to share that peace and wellbeing with their community.

Francine works by supporting a person to gain more freedom of movement through their whole body, from the feet to the hips, spine, shoulders, all the way up to the small bones that make up the head and face.

As such, Francine enjoys treating members of the whole family, including mums and babies, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. In her practice she commonly sees individuals with a wide range of complaints, such as foot and ankle pain, knee pain, low back pain, aches and pains from pregnancy, shoulder pain, neck pain, headaches and TMJ pain.

She has also worked in a wide range of contexts, such as treating young dancers and elderly clients at a podiatrist’s clinic, as well as volunteering at a center for previously homeless individuals.

Francine was inspired by the humanistic focus of Osteopathy, how the art and science of its approach were inseparable and interlinked. This was what she saw from her father’s practice; he was an orthopedic surgeon who changed to practice as an Osteopath. His treatments helped her and her brother recover from many ailments while growing up; including asthma, sinus and mid ear infections, scoliosis, and stresses from school and growth spurts in general.

Since graduation, Francine has taken further courses on cranial osteopathy and pediatric osteopathy. She has also completed the Gray Institute for Functional Transformation training; and is able to tailor-make functional movement exercises adapted to each person’s needs, whether it is for completing tasks in everyday life or to improve sport performance.

And while Francine feels that while hands-on work can be a powerful tool in helping the healing process, however her goal is to empower clients to be able to ‘treat themselves’ even when they return home, so that they can help their bodies become more resilient, and relax their minds from everyday stress.

Francine has found that Qigong is one of the many practices that can help a person in this way, as it involves both a moving meditation and a still meditation. Francine aims to lead by example, and she is also willing to offer free qigong group practice sessions on request; as long as one person is interested, she will be there!

In her free time, she enjoys playing music with friends, improvising with the bass recorder, guitar, piano, djembe and kalimba; as well as learning circular breathing for the didgeridoo. She enjoys singing too, whether in a group or just playing with the echoes in valleys and canyons. She also enjoys spending time at huts, hiking and kayaking, cross country and telemark skiing, and just being in these mountains.

She is originally from Hong Kong, and speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Lindsey Williams Osteopathic Manual Therapist DOMP, B.Sc (Kinesiology); B.Ed, M.A. Leadership, Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner, e-RYT-500.

Living in the Canadian Rockies, I am inspired by the mountains and rivers to move, play, and live in alignment with my natural surroundings. The human body blows me away in its capacity to learn, adapt, and grow given the right “fuel” sources. Literally what powers me is not only the food I eat, but also how I move and feed my nerves, muscles, and joints with playful movements. I love theory and science, just as much as I love letting go and riding the waves of intuition. I am currently in my third year of studies as an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner, where I am continually humbled by the amazing interconnections and healing capacity of our bodies. I have been able to weave this knowledge into how I teach classes, design programs for clients, and indeed think about wellness in general. I believe living that sustainably means taking care of our body and our planet. I pull this philosophy into all that I do…
